But the twins were already skipping away, laughing.

Iris puffed out her cheeks. “I guess we’ll be stuck here ’til Bob comes back, whenever that might be.”

“But that could be hours!” Evie gripped the railing. “If Hannah finds out I’m missing, she’ll call the police!”

“And that’s not going to put her in a great mood,” Iris said.

“Yeah, and what if she blames Fudge?” Evie said. “Because we got stuck in here when I was trying to keep him safe from the gulls.”

“What? You think she might decide not to keep him just because you got trapped in a lighthouse?”

Evie shrugged. “Maybe not. But if she’s looking for a reason to let the dog trainer adopt him instead, this could make her mind up.”

Iris grimaced. “That’s bad news for Fudge.”

At the sound of his name the pup’s tail drooped, and his ears flattened as though he understood every word and wasn’t very happy about it.

“Hey—there are people over there,” Zak said. “Maybe we can shout to them. HELLO!” he yelled, waving wildly. “WE’RE LOCKED INSIDE! HELP!”

But the people didn’t see them.

“Try waving something,” Evie said, looking around for anything that would catch their attention.

“Oh, I have a flag in here somewhere.” Agent Hood put her hand into her basket again.

But Zak shook his head. “There’s no time. They look like they’re leaving…”

“Our overalls!” Iris said. “Quick! Everyone take them off and shake them!”

“With pleasure,” Zak muttered, stepping out of his.

Evie peeled off hers, too, and began wafting them in the breeze. “It’s working!” she said. “Look! They’re staring up here now.”

But the people just waved back, then turned away.

“Urgh! They just think we’re being friendly,” Iris groaned. “And even if they did come to help us, the twins took the key. So they can’t let us out. Face it: We’re caught like rats in a trap.”

Evie sank down to the floor with her back against the railing. She pulled Fudge in for a hug. “What are we going to do, boy? There’s got to be an answer…” But the pup just cocked his head to one side and wagged his tail. “Oh, if only Agent R was here,” Evie sighed. “Because Rapunzel’s great at escaping from towers.” The words were no sooner out of her mouth than an idea popped into her head. “Wait—maybe I could make another wish on the magic book?”

Agent Hood stiffened. “No. I told you. The other agents are WAY too busy today.”

“But maybe they’d still come,” Evie said, scrambling to her feet. “If they knew it was an emergency, they’d definitely help me. I’m sure of it.” She pulled off her backpack and began scrabbling around inside for the book. “Huh? Where is it?” She looked again. “It’s gone!” Her throat suddenly felt full of sand. “I’ve lost it!” she croaked. “The book has disappeared!”

“Let me look.” Iris crouched down next to her. “It’s got to be in here somewhere.”

“You don’t think—” Evie bit her lip. “Maybe the Pembertons took it again?”

“Impossible,” Zak said. “We’d have seen them.
